Dr Toby Marthews took over leadership of the JA in May 2026 and is in the process of realigning the project towards 'Training of the Trainers' (ToT) and expanding the current network (Fig. 1 and below) into a network of JULES Academy Regional Hubs (JARHs).

Launched in early 2025 by Dr Eleanor Blyth and Dr Rachael Turton (funded by the UKCEH National Capability for Global Challenges programme NCGC). The aim of the JA initiative is to introduce and provide training in the JULES model to interested academics and professionals in Africa:
a) To link academic and operational climate, water and land research in East Africa and West Africa through use of a shared modelling platform, b) To fast-track African academics into international science by using a world-leading land surface model [JULES] and c) To improve the model in its representation of the African land-atmosphere system. See here for Dr Blyth setting out the aims and intentions of the JULES Academy at the JULES Meeting in Leicester, UK, in September 2025. See here for JULES Academy activity in late 2025/early 2026, including our workshops in September 2025 in Accra and January 2026 in Nairobi. Timeline:
