JASMIN Access

JASMIN access may be provided for all projects within the NERC remit * and either working at or collaborating with an eligible UK institution (n.b. the actual person may or may not be based in the UK; short-term training accounts may be requested by event organisers (not by attendees) for particular events).

If you are not familiar with UNIX/Linux systems, please see here for my UNIX Basics doc (scroll to the bottom).

Check the JASMIN Services you are subscribed to here.
The best way to start with JASMIN  is to go through the Getting started with JASMIN webinars you can find on https://help.jasmin.ac.uk/docs/getting-started/get-started-with-jasmin/ and the first few sections of https://help.jasmin.ac.uk/category/158-getting-started. (the webpage at https://jules-lsm.github.io/tutorial/bg_info/tutorial_julesrose also has similar notes, though much briefer). Access JASMIN as follows:

  1. You must be able to use an affiliated email (i.e. a student or staff institutional email provided by an academic or private institution, not a personal gmail or hotmail address).
  2. See here for access restrictions. JASMIN will automatically refuse access from unrecognised machines (e.g. personal laptops), even if you have applied correctly for a login below. Therefore, the first thing to assess is whether you are able to log in to JASMIN at all. If you can access any sort of server (whether at an academic institution or not), then you should be OK. Please check that you have access to the other basic requirements listed here for JULES access.
  3. All JASMIN users need to have a CEDA login, a login account and an SSH key. See Get started with JASMIN and these videos describe the process in detail (however n.b. those videos are old and still use the old server names like jasmin-login1.ceda.ac.uk: this will no longer work because it has been replaced with login1.jasmin.ac.uk, as it correctly says on the Get Started page). On approval, you will automatically be subscribed to the JASMIN-USERS Jiscmail listserv, and note the CEDA support email is support at ceda dot ac dot uk (see also CEDA Help).

*** n.b. You have to (i) apply for a JASMIN account and then (ii) apply for a JASMIN 'login service' (via the JASMIN Accounts Portal) and you need both to be able to access JASMIN. If you have a JASMIN account but have not applied for the login service, you will get "Permission denied" when you log in. ***

  • Log into the JASMIN Notebook Service by going to https://notebooks.jasmin.ac.uk/ and it should set up your Notebook environment for you (if you get an error here, then try logging into your JASMIN Account on another tab as well). Note: this is NOT ESSENTIAL for running JULES, but is a useful service with datasets available for standard analyses.
  • Please see the Rose JULES on JASMIN help page.
  • Once you have JASMIN access, please feel free to copy any of the settings in ~tmarthews/.bashrc and put them into your own .bashrc file.
  • JASMIN users wishing to use the JULES land surface model long-term should also request access to some relevant services (although n.b. You will NOT need access to any services for any of my trainings courses or the Hydro-JULES Summer School). JASMIN services you are subscribed to are listed here and clicking on “Group workspaces” or “Additional services” on the left show you other services that are available (see also JASMIN Help). NERC-funded users can request access to nerctools (NERC software tools) and jules (JULES workspace), but n.b. these are NOT necessary for the Summer/Winter Schools. Check whether you have access to e.g. the jules workspace with this command: ls -ltr /gws/nopw/j04/jules.
  • Make sure you are familiar with the other tools available through CEDA and JASMIN - they can make your life much easier! - including the CEDA Data Catalogue and JASPY software environments.
  • Finally, be aware that CEDA runs regular webinars that can be very useful in learning how to use all these and other tools.
* Working "within the NERC remit" essentially just means you are in the broad area of Environmental Science. For more specific information see here.
** See here: there is no longer any requirement for a reverse DNS entry. or restriction by institutional domain.
