JASMIN Access

JASMIN access may be provided for all projects within the NERC remit * and either working at or collaborating with an eligible UK institution (n.b. the actual person may or may not be based in the UK; short-term training accounts may be requested by event organisers (not by attendees) for particular events).

If you are not familiar with UNIX/Linux systems, please see here for my UNIX Basics doc (scroll to the bottom).

Check the JASMIN Services you are subscribed to (inc. group workspace access) here.

To find out whether you have access to a group workspace, go to the relevant page (e.g. here for the jules GWS), find the location where it is mounted on the system ($PATH, say) and then do ls -ltr $PATH).
The best way to start with JASMIN  is to go through the Getting started with JASMIN webinars you can find on https://help.jasmin.ac.uk/docs/getting-started/get-started-with-jasmin/. Access JASMIN as follows:

  • You must be able to use an affiliated email (i.e. a student or staff institutional email provided by an academic or private institution, not a personal gmail or hotmail address).
  • On approval, you will automatically be subscribed to the JASMIN-USERS Jiscmail listserv.

*** n.b. You have to (i) apply for a JASMIN account and then (ii) apply for a JASMIN 'login service' (via the JASMIN Accounts Portal) and you need both to be able to access JASMIN. If you have a JASMIN account but have not applied for the login service, you will get "Permission denied" when you log in. ***

  • Once you have JASMIN access, please feel free to copy any of the settings in ~tmarthews/.bashrc and put them into your own .bashrc file (I have left my .bashrc file publicly accessible so that you can do this).
  • JASMIN users wishing to use the JULES land surface model long-term should also request access to some relevant services (although n.b. You will NOT need access to any services for any of my trainings courses). JASMIN services you are subscribed to are listed here and clicking on “Group workspaces” or “Additional services” on the left show you other services that are available. NERC-funded users can request access to nerctools (NERC software tools) and jules (JULES workspace) too.
  • If you want to use it, log into the JASMIN Notebook Service by going to https://notebooks.jasmin.ac.uk/ (if this is your first time, it will set up your Notebook environment for you (if you get an error here, then try logging into your JASMIN Account on another tab as well). Please note that (i) the notebook browser-based interface has much reduced functionality in comparison to the UNIX/Linux command line interface (CLI), (ii) specifically, I am not aware of any way you can run JULES through the Notebook environment and (iii) learning to use the Notebook environment is not essential for running JULES, although it is a useful service with datasets available for standard analyses (i.e. you can run JULES on the CLI and then flip to Notebooks to analyse the outputs).
  • Be aware that the Rose JULES on JASMIN help page and the webpage at https://jules-lsm.github.io/tutorial/bg_info/tutorial_julesrose/jr_jasmin_setup.html have more specific notes for using JULES on JASMIN, but neither has currently been updated to Cylc8.
  • Make sure you are familiar with the other tools available through CEDA and JASMIN - they can make your life much easier! - including the CEDA Data Catalogue and JASPY software environments.
  • Finally, be aware that CEDA runs regular webinars that can be very useful in learning how to use all these and other tools.
* Working "within the NERC remit" essentially just means you are in the broad area of Environmental Science. For more specific information see here (open to people based in the UK or elsewhere).
** See here: there is no longer any requirement for a reverse DNS entry. or restriction by institutional domain.
